Age Appropriate Therapies – Babies & Children

Some issues can be resolved through Parent Management Training and Psycho-Education with parents’ increased understanding of their child’s developmental needs. However, babies and young toddlers may be observed with the parent and in play. Therapy with three to five year olds is mainly through play, drawing and some talk, while primary school aged children mostly draw and talk. Therapy usually involves a combination of work with the parents around management issues, as well as individual work with the child.

Initial Consultation

In the majority of cases, if the child or young person is aged 15 years or less, the first consultation is conducted with the parents only.  This gives parents the opportunity to provide the psychologist with an outline of their child’s developmental history as well as a better understanding of why they are seeking psychological support. The child or young person is then seen either in the company of a parent or individually for the second session.  After these two sessions have been completed, feedback is provided to the parents and a treatment plan is devised and agreed upon.

Therapy with Adolescents and Confidentiality

Psychotherapy with older children and adolescents is mainly talking therapy as with adults. Confidentiality is an important issue at this age, so if parents are seen, the young person should have agreed to this.  Parents can regularly attend part of a session or a full session with their child.

Collaborative Therapy

Therapy with children and adolescents involves the therapists working collaboratively with the parents and young people in determining the goals for the work and the approach to take. In some cases this may involve one therapist working with parents and another therapist working with the child or adolescent.
